My Life as a Rainbow: The Misconceptions of Homosexuality
Chapter Eight
Apparently there are still people out there who don’t know the real truth about being gay. Homosexuality used to be a taboo subject that hardly anyone talked about back in the day, but in today’s society it’s becoming more and more accepted. To all the people who aren't familiar with the LGBT community, think of this as your Gay 101 course.
Myth #1: Homosexuality is a choice.
Telling someone being gay is a choice is like saying being black is a choice as well. It is impossible to “teach” someone how to be straight or gay. Also, in saying that being homosexual is a choice, you’re also implying that every heterosexual can choose to be gay as well. There is no study that supports that statement. On top of that, scientists have found homosexual behaviors in animals as well. Does that mean animals choose to be gay?
Myth #2: Homosexuality is a disease.
Homosexuality is not a disease or a mental disorder. It is normal. There is no scientific evidence to support this theory. In fact even the DSM says so.
Myth #3: Gay families somehow raise children to become gay themselves.
Not true at all. You can’t teach anyone to be straight or gay so this is automatically false. In case anyone didn’t know, there are gay families with straight children. Also children from either gay or straight families are raised just the same. Visit colage.org for more supporting details.
Myth #4: Gays want special rights
First of all, we don’t want special rights, we want EQUAL rights. There is a difference…The right to marry, the right to be free from discrimination from job and all the other rights that heterosexual people can freely enjoy as well.
Myth #5: Gays pose a risk to the institution of marriage
Oh yeah, people can get married and divorce countless of times, have 55 hour marriages and all that jazz but God forbid we let homosexuals get married. It would be very much of a contradiction for anyone to say that knowing that there’s a 50 percent divorce rate in the United States.
