Pride in October



Since 1994, the LGBT community, (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender), have made the month of October LGBT History Month in the US. Not only is the month being celebrated for its gay history and gay political movements, there are other holidays that are being celebrated as well.


National Coming Out Day: October 11
Rob Eichberg and Jean O’Leary were the ones who created NCOD back in 1987. The LGBT community wanted a day where they can celebrate coming out so they chose October 11 as the anniversary when they went to march on Washington to protest anti – gay actions.

Ally Week: October 17 – 21
In 2005, GLSEN, Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network, wanted to celebrate allies who were committed to making sure the LGBT people were in a safe school environment. They created Ally Week to encourage students to stand against bullying and harassment the LGBT youth face in school.

Intersex Awareness Day: October 26
The Intersex Society of Naughty America held their first public demonstration in Boston of 1996. Intersex Awareness Day deals with the action to end shame, secrecy and unwanted genital cosmetic surgeries on intersex children.
