Written by Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal, this 1980's inspired ballad was sang by Gwen Stefani on her second solo album "The Sweet Escape". The track became her third single off of the album. Even though the song had positive reviews from the critics, it was commercially unsuccessful in the US.
"4 In the Morning" is about being in love and not wanting to lose that feeling. Stefani sings about her being in love so much that she'll work out through the fights since she knows it'll be worth it in the end.
"I give you everything that i am/I'm handing over everything that i got/Cause I wanna have a really true love/Don't every want to have to go and give you up/Stay up till 4 in the morning and the tears are pouring/And i wanna make it worth the fight/What have we been doing for all this time/Baby if we're gonna do it, come on and do it right."
Lyrically this song is good. It's not the usual tongue and cheek lyrics Stefani tends to write but nonetheless this ballad is a good switch on seeing a different side to Gwen.
The melody is decent but at times it seems like the song drags a little too long for it to end. Stefani's vocals are alright but within the chorus she doesn't fully use her vocals which to some listeners can be a little annoying to hear at times.
Over all "4 In the Morning" is three out of five stars. Good lyrics but the song takes a lot longer to finish and at times has grating vocals around the chorus.
